Carbon footprint & the New Year resolutions league table

I hear from this DEFRA page "According to a YouGov poll, just 15 per cent of Britons have resolved to reduce their carbon footprint in 2008, compared to 38 per cent pledging to lose weight and 20 per cent aiming to make more money."

I don't find this very surprising. It seems to me to echo wider priorities that come across in news coverage and Govt policy.

Personally I do find it surprising.

It would imply that:

1) 15% of Britons knows what the carbon footprint is

2) 15% of Britons really care about it

The percentage seems incredibly high and unrealistic (unless the question was worded in a very simple way) - and I think it would be unrealistic for almost every country in the world.

Interesting. I guess it depends who was asked and how. On reflection I'm not really sure what such a poll does reveal. I was thinking that it would indicate that 15% had a vague interest or intention to do something about environment rather than there'd be any depth of understanding or commitment. At least that's my experience of new year's resolutions.
